Cross-Cultural Coaching Services

We offer the following two cross-cultural coaching programs:

Option 1: Designed specifically for immigrants and expatriates who are currently working within an organization and are experiencing on-going transition challenges

Option 2: Designed specifically for immigrants and expatriates who have recently been hired by an organization and will soon be moving to Canada or America to begin their new job

We also offer cross-cultural coaching for spouses of employees immigrating to Canada or the United States, including coaching on job search skills.

Cross-Cultural Coaching - Option 1:

Under this Option, we offer three different programs ranging in length, activities, and intensity. The program an individual participates in is based largely on the following factors:

  • Level of support required
  • Perceived (potential) value of the individual to the organization

In some cases, therefore, an employee may receive only two to four hours of cross-cultural coaching over a few months. Others, however, may be provided with significantly more support consisting of one or more of the following activities:

  • An initial needs assessment:
    • Completion of a cross-cultural assessment tool
    • Meetings with the employee, the employee's manager and, if appropriate, the employee's HR representative
  • Up to six months (or more) of weekly or bi-weekly coaching
  • Manager information sessions, update meetings, and/or coaching
  • Review of a comprehensive document containing culturally-related information designed to help ensure a smooth and quick transition to Canada or to the United States. Participants are provided with this document and are encouraged to refer to it whenever and wherever necessary during their transition phase to North America.

Cross-Cultural Coaching - Option 2:

All participants under this coaching Option receive the same program, which consists of the following:

  • Initial telephone contact with the new hire, ideally more than three weeks prior to their move to Canada or the United States
  • Completion of a cross-cultural assessment tool
  • Approximately 4.5 hours of one-on-one coaching
  • A one-hour follow-up coaching session approximately six months after beginning their job in North America

Any additional coaching/support that is required would be identified and approved on a case-by-case basis.

Spouse Cross-Cultural Coaching Programs

Basic Spouse Coaching Program

The degree to which an immigrant's, or expatriate's, spouse is adjusting to their move to a new country has a significant impact on their family life and, accordingly, on the new hire's work performance and likelihood of remaining in Canada or the United States. Therefore, in the case of married foreign new hires, we highly recommend that the immigrant's or expatriate's spouse also be provided with cross-cultural support.

Our basic spouse coaching program consists of the following:

  • Completion of our Cultural Assessment Tool
  • 1.5 hour coaching session

Any additional coaching/support that is required would be identified and approved on a case-by-case basis.

Spouse Job Search Program

Many spouses of foreign new hires arrive in Canada with the idea that they will not encounter many difficulties finding a job. In many cases, however, their job search turns out to be more challenging than they had originally anticipated, and this often leads to the spouse becoming discouraged and unhappy. If not provided with adequate support, the spouse may encourage and, in fact, begin to pressure their partner to return home. For obvious reasons, this can become a significant and costly problem for the organization.

Our Spouse Job Search Program consists of an initial needs assessment of 1.5 hours to determine the key issues that need to be addressed to facilitate a successful job search, as well as the amount of support that will be required. Participants then receive coaching based upon their varying levels of need:

  • Gold Program: 18.5 coaching hours plus initial 1.5 hour needs assessment meeting (for individuals who require a significant amount of coaching as they come from a country that is very different from Canada and are in a profession that is difficult to transfer).
  • Silver Program: 8.5 coaching hours plus initial 1.5 hour needs assessment meeting (for individuals who require a moderate amount of coaching to deal with a few significant job related issues that they are struggling with).
  • Bronze Program: 3.5 coaching hours plus initial 1.5 hour needs assessment meeting (for individuals who require only a minimal amount of coaching to help them get their job search on track and stay on track).
