June is bustin’ out all over with LGBTQ+ headlines this year and it couldn’t be more thrilling to witness as a diversity professional. Global Learning has always stood with our LGBT family, friends and colleagues. We boldly champion their equal inclusion in all areas of life; particularly in the workplace. To see the LGBTQ+ plights, struggles, and hard fought battles proving to have been worth it, is nothing short of brilliant.
Below, you will find several recent LGBT highlights from the headlines that we think you might find of interest:

Marriage Equality in the U.S.
This June, the U.S. Supreme Court will hear the Obergefell v. Hodges case, which has been consolidated with several other similar cases. The case challenges either a state’s refusal to recognize same-sex marriages from other jurisdictions or a state’s refusal to license same-sex marriages, or both. This will be a landmark decision as it could lead to marriage-equality becoming federal law in the U.S.

Fun Home on Broadway
Fun Home is a Broadway musical based on the 2006 auto-biographic graphic novel of the same name, written by Alison Bechdel. In the musical we meet Alison and her family, as she grapples with her identity, her sexual orientation and the realization that her family members, particularly her father also have their own struggles.
In case you missed it, you must watch 11 year old Tony Nominated, Sydney Lucas, who portrays Alison in the Broadway’s Fun Home bring Radio City Music Hall, and a world of theater lovers to their emotional knees.
Performing the song “Ring of Keys” at this year’s Tony Award Ceremony, we experience an 11 year old Alison, seeing a specific delivery woman for the first time. We watch (and listen) as she discovers that she isn’t alone, and is perhaps a part of a bigger tribe than she once thought.

Most of us by now have been introduced to Caitlyn Jenner, formally known as Bruce Jenner via Vanity Fair Magazine. I stand on the side of those who adamantly support Ms. Jenner in not only her decision to live as her true-self, but to make such a public transition. It must certainly be noted that the process of transitioning is quite varied for each individual, and that Ms. Jenner’s affluence plays a major role in what seems to have been a rather smooth transition experience. It still takes such strong examples as Caitlyn to help empower anyone struggling with their own gender identity to stand tall and proclaim “This is I who I am.”

LGBT Pride Month
All around the world, LGBT pride events are taking place this month and well into the summer. You are strongly encouraged to take the time to participate in your home town LGBT Pride events. Attending a pride event is the perfect way to make a clear statement that you are a part of or support your LGBT community. With sponsorship and heightened brand awareness, a corporate brand’s presence at an LGBT Pride event has become a clear marker of inclusive organizational behaviour. Which attracts not only new customers, but new potential team members as well. Many brands utilize their social networks to amplify their support of the LGBT community.
