What Is Web Accessibility Legislation?
On June 21, 2019, the Accessible Canada Act became law after receiving Royal Assent from the House of Commons. This act builds on the Canadian Human Rights Act and complements comprehensive provincial legislation such as the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA), the Accessibility for Manitobans Act (AMA), and the Nova Scotia Accessibility Act. The Accessible Canada Act aims to ensure that people with disabilities have unrestricted access to goods and services, including digital content and the technologies used to access it.
The act requires compliance with the international Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) Level 2.1 and the Canadian Standard on Web Accessibility (2011).
